Often lacking corporate HR and internal legal resources for advice, its essential associations and the people behind them are aware of risk and where insurance protection can help.

We Know What Works

Associations (sometimes referred to as no-for-profit) come in all shapes and sizes. From like-minded individuals/friends, forming a small informal association for a specific aim/cause; to large professional and trade bodies servicing thousands of members, they all play a key role in the business & socio-economic landscape.

Liabilities common to commercial business also occur in the course of running an association. Associations will have legal relationships with third parties, such as landlords, funders, members, staff & volunteers; or suppliers and all these inter-relationships carry the risk of legal liability and potential claims.

What insurance may I need?

Even the best run association can be a victim of unforeseen events – unfortunately, not everything is in your control. If you have suitable business insurance in place it will cover potential risks and minimise your exposure.

Employers’ liability insurance

Voluntary organisations are obliged by law to have employers’ liability insurance to cover all volunteers and employees who are not family members.

Employers’ liability insurance covers the cost of compensating volunteers and employees who are injured at or become ill through work.

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance covers the cost of claims made by members of the public for incidents that occur in connection with your business activities.

If members of the public visit your organisation’s premises, or you arrange off-site events you should consider taking out public liability insurance.

Motor insurance

If your organisation uses vehicles for voluntary purposes you are legally obliged to have motor insurance. Motor insurance covers you against costs that arise as a result of injuries caused to other people and damage to their vehicles.

  • If a your organisation has its own vehicles for volunteers to drive, it is up to you to arrange insurance for your entire fleet.
  • If your volunteers use their own vehicles, they should be covered by their own motor insurance policy, but they should check with their insurer to be sure.

Property insurance

Property insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your organisation’s premises, or replacing its contents. It will cover against risks such as flooding, fire and theft.

There are two types of property insurance – buildings insurance and contents insurance:

  • buildings insurance covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your business premises if it is damaged or destroyed
  • contents insurance covers the cost of replacing your property’s contents if they are damaged or stolen

Trustee liability insurance

If you are in a position of trust or leadership within a voluntary organisation, you should consider taking out trustee liability insurance. This covers you for compensation claims resulting from mismanagement of the organisation and any associated legal costs.

Other covers to consider

We understand that non-profit organisations need insurance suited to their specific circumstances.

Charities, clubs and associations are a specialist area of insurance which if not understood and then placed incorrectly can leave the organisation exposed to potentially crippling costs if the policy does not respond due to a gap in cover.

Commercial Legal Expenses

A commercial legal expenses policy is a cost-effective insurance to cover the expense of either defending or pursuing legal action for a wide range of scenarios.

Fleet Insurance

If you have multiple vehicles within your association, it may be an idea to look into getting a well suited commercial fleet insurance policy that will protect your vehicles and in case of any incidents.

Directors & Officers Liability Protection

Also known as D&O Insurance, protects charities, company managers, directors and officers against liability claims which arise from decisions and actions taken as part of their day-to-day duties.

Cyber Insurance

Cyber insurance covers the losses relating to damage to, or loss of information from, IT systems and networks.
